The tournament is held annually at Methuen High School in Methuen, Massachusetts, to raise money for the Shawn Bisson Scholarship Fund supporting graduating MHS seniors. We typically generate around $4,000 which is donated to the school.
Games are played "Pond Hockey" style and the players manage the games with a single official managing the clock and running the scoreboard.
The tournament, played mainly by local pick-up hockey players, runs over a Friday night and Saturday, usually in late October or early November. Friday nights involve round-robin play with teams typically playing three short games. The best two teams from Friday night play a full 60-minute, 3 period game (with a zam between periods) to determine pond hockey glory bragging rights. All players receive a tournament hockey jersey and the overall winners get the coveted Championship T-Shirt. It's all in good fun and everyone gets to feel like a kid again! Add in some great raffle prizes and all the mini-chicken salad sandwiches and whoopie pies you can eat, and the tournament makes for a great pond hockey weekend while raising funds to help high school students with their college tuition.
And part of the fun... from year to year, you never know which team you'll be picked for so you might get to play with your friends one year and against them next time--we find this model keeps it light, reduces confrontation, and promotes the sportsmanship and comradery that has been a hallmark of this tournament since it's inception!
Please sign up to play or volunteer -- we look forward to hearing from you!
Ed Bisson started this tournament to honor his son, Shawn, who died in a tragic vehicle accident. Ed brings us all together to play some hockey, have some fun, remember his son, and generate scholarship funds. All proceeds go to the "Shawn Bisson Scholarship Fund" and are provided to Methuen High School to help seniors with college tuition. All administration of the tournament is performed by volunteers -- if you'd like to volunteer to help, please register as a volunteer!
